Donald "Junior" Childers Obituary

Donald Lee “Junior” Childers, age 89, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Envive Healthcare of Evansville.

Junior was born April 21, 1934, in Evansville, IN, to the late Leroy Childers and Stella (Shoulders) Mattingly. Junior was a nickname given to him by a Bosse High School teacher, it stuck and has been the name he was known and called by all his acquaintances through the years.

Junior worked in automotive for Sears and Roebuck for many years before working at several gas stations on the southeast side of Evansville. He completed his working career at Randall’s Marathon on Oak Hill Road in Evansville. He loved to work on cars, especially a 1940 Red Truck that he loved and restored. Junior served in the Indiana Naval Reserves for 6 or 7 years.

Junior and Sandy loved to go to Gospel Singings. They enjoyed being a part of the “FSBC Keenagers” Senior Adult Ministry and attending their dinners and programs. Junior was of the Catholic faith, but he attended First Southern Baptist Church with Sandy and her mother through the years, as well as Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Junior was a caregiver to Sandy and to her Mom and Dad in later years, helping each of them in any way that he could. He was a loyal, caring guy, always presenting a cheerful side of himself. Junior was a “people person” who never met a stranger.

Junior loved the Lord, whom he called “Master.” When something happened, he went to the Lord in prayer, especially for “others.”

Junior is survived by his loving companion of 42 years, Sandra Massie (February 18, 2024 was their 42nd Anniversary); brother-in-law, Norm Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Junior is preceded in death by his parents; step father, James Mattingly; and sisters, Betty Simpson, Gloria Barclay and Janice Jackson.
