Paul W. Schmidt, 87, of Evansville, IN died August 16, 2012 at the VNA Charlier Hospice Center on the occasion of his 65th wedding anniversary.
Paul was born in Evansville and was a 1943 graduate of Bosse High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Evansville College in 1949, followed by his Masters degree in 1956 from Indiana University. He also studied at Ball State University and the University of Missouri. Paul served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater as a waist gunner on a B-17 aircraft.
Paul was employed by the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation for 34 years. He served as a math and science teacher, vocational and guidance counselor and Assistant Principal at North High School. In 1975 he became Principal at Bosse High School – his alma mater – and held that position until his retirement in 1985.
Paul was an active member of Christ Church United Church of Christ since 1953. Throughout the years he served as president of the congregation, elder, deacon, fundraiser and trustee of the Carolyn Fisher Trust. Paul’s other memberships over the years included the Good Samaritan Home Board of Directors, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, United Commercial Travelers, Indiana State Teachers Association, Western Hills Country Club in Mt. Vernon and life membership in the National Education Association.
Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edith (Ellerbrook) Schmidt; daughter Paula Schmidt-Lewis and her husband Jeffrey of Indianapolis; son Steven Paul Schmidt, PhD, and his partner, Richard Krochka, of Akron, OH; sister Martha Jean Allison of Cleveland, TN; four grand-children including David Paul Lewis and his fiancé Mitra Khaksari, Kristin Schmidt Lewis, Allyson Schmidt Guran and her husband Mark, and Taryn E. Schmidt; special “adopted” daughters Lucy Axtell, MD, and Tami DuPriest Vanette. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Louis F. Schmidt, Jr., and Nina (Hassell) Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Monday, August 20, 2012, at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 3601 Washington Avenue with Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 pm until 6 pm on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue. Friends will also be received beginning at 9 am on Monday, August 20, 2012, in the foyer of Christ Church before the funeral service.
