Lester Ewing

Lester B. Ewing, 93, of Evansville, Indiana passed away at 1:12 pm, Friday, April 20, 2012 at Angel River Health and Rehabilitation.

Les was born July 9, 1918 in Cynthiana, Indiana to Ransom and Edna (Bixler) Ewing. While serving in the United States Army Air Corps in Wichita Falls, Texas, he met Betty Bryant Carson. They married on June 30, 1945 and moved to Evansville. Les graduated from Evansville College in 1947 and later received his Master’s Degree from Indiana University. Les began his teaching career at Centennial Grade School. His 1949 basketball team won the City Championship. He was named principal of Lodge School in 1954, and then became principal of Stanley Hall School. Les was the principal of Fairlawn School for 14 years, and he retired in 1983 after 36 years of service for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. Les organized the first Pony League Baseball Program in 1955, and he served as Director of the East and West leagues for 14 years. The East Pony League All Stars won The World Series in 1963. Les and Betty were proud parents of their children, Bill and Susan. They visited Betty’s parents in Texas for Christmas every year. The Ewings also enjoyed attending IU basketball games and St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. Les loved the game of golf throughout his life. One of his greatest pleasures was teaching his grandson, Bryant Mosbey, to play golf. When Bryant and Alex were married on Les’s 93rd birthday last summer, they asked him to be the best man. When they had the 250 wedding guests sing “Happy Birthday” to Les, it was the most wonderful end of a perfect day. Les and Betty were members and former Sunday School teachers at First Baptist Church. They belonged to American Baptist East Church, and Les served as Superintendant of the Sunday School for 16 years. Les was a basketball official for over 20 years. As the YMCA Baseball Director, he organized the first Youth Baseball League to play at Bosse Field. Les was a member of the Board of Directors of the Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union and was Chairman of the Board in 1987 and 1988. He was a member of the Evansville Teachers Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, National Elementary Principals Association, and the State Principals Association. Les was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa and served as president of the Vanderburgh County Principals Association.

Les was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty Ewing in 2011. His parents, one sister and two brothers also preceded him in death. He is survived by son, Bill Ewing and his companion, Sandy Stewart of Indianapolis, IN, daughter, Susan Mosbey and her husband Don of Evansville, IN, grandsons, Bryant Mosbey and his wife, Alex of Evansville, IN and Matthew Ewing of Miami, FL and brother, Bob Ewing and his wife Ada of Lafayette, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am, Monday, April 23, 2012 at American Baptist East Church, 6300 Washington Avenue with Reverend Ange Humphrey-Relyea officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
